Shayn Roby’s Take: Alabama has not lost to an opponent outside the SEC since January 2, 2009. That was to Utah in the Sugar Bowl. It was a game in which Outland Trophy winner Andre Smith missed, and a game in which Alabama seemed to lack motivation. Possibly it was a letdown factor in that game. Their only loss was to Florida in the SEC Championship game. It’s strange to say that playing in the Sugar Bowl could set a team up for a letdown. However, when playing for the National Championship is what was expected, there probably is some merit to that claim.
