Although their offensive output was limited against East Carolina, a little bit of smallball was enough to edge the Vanderbilt Commodores past the Pirates in the first game of a best of three series. Kumar Rocker pitched 7 2/3 innings of shutout baseball, and Nick Maldonado finished the job for the final inning and a third, as they posted a 2-0 win.
